These open cavity, half-mallets are our reigning target putting champions. Many, many putters are better looking, but these Pings win more accuracy contests on our target grids in the hands of more testers than any other of our dozens of putters. Even those who do not like the B60s win with them. And, as an added bonus, they perform even better on the golf course.
The plain, stainless steel B60 is the biggest winner of the two, but it has a unique grip on it called the Ping Palm Lock. It has wide, flat sides which align the right hand perpendicular to the target line. The golfer naturally leads open-handed down the line to the cup. Not all B60s have this grip, however.
The regular B60 varies from its sister in other slight ways as well. The flange is slightly less wide. The hosel is slightly shorter as well. The larger, flat grip also raised the weight center up the shaft slightly and the face balances down an extra ten degrees or so. The B60 is a twenty degree hanger + while the B60i hangs thirty degrees plus. Click here for putter balancing explanations
These putters with their thin top edge and single, long white stripe are as easy to aim as any we have used. It is instinctual with many golfers. It is a design which leads the person putting to ‘stay down the line’ a bit longer than normal. That is always helpful.
The feel of these putters is at all times pleasant and easy. We found the Isopur insert to be an attractive addition, but by and large, an unnecessary one. It did provide a feel at impact that was slightly softer and it did seem to dampen the velocity of the putt. The plain B60 is a livelier putter without the insert.
One of the reasons why this design works so well is also one of the reasons why the B60s are not as attractive as many of their rivals. The back flange is curved into a subtly awkward shape that is asymmetrical when viewed from above. The sweet spot is a bit closer to the heel than the toe.
These are both exceedingly fine putters. We love them both, but prefer the plain B60. Two testers have chosen it as their number one choice of putters overall giving it a double Testers’ Choice Award. The fact that it is priced well just adds to its luster.
